Overview

Austin, TX board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Renee Snyder, works with patients who are experiencing hair loss and treats this condition using a number of nonsurgical alternatives. Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, is an emerging nonsurgical based treatment for both men and women that is showing remarkable results in slowing down, stopping, and even reversing (in some cases) hair loss. PRP has also shown promising outcomes in patients with alopecia areata and thinning eyebrows. Dr. Snyder and her team of medical practitioners use powerful blend of natural growth factors and bioactive proteins to help restore and strengthen the function of the hair. Dr. Snyder understands that hair loss is a major concern for many men and women. Her goal is to consult with you and discuss the alternatives that are available to help treat the condition.

About PRP Therapy

Dr. Snyder uses PRP for a variety of conditions. Individuals experiencing hair loss may benefit from powerful proteins that reside in the platelets, which are a component of blood that contains specific growth factors. These growth factors, once introduced into the scalp, activate your own growth factors and help generate new hair growth by stimulating dormant hair follicles, and preserve and thicken hair. Dr. Snyder is also able to use PRP for other healing purposes, for example after a surgical procedure, as well as after someone undergoes hair transplant surgery. While PRP therapy has recently received a lot of attention, it has been in use for several decades. PRP is currently used in many areas of medicine, including dermatology, orthopedic and sports medicine, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. The growth factors found in platelets have been shown to accelerate wound healing, tissue repair, and skin rejuvenation.

What to Expect

As a non-invasive solution, the PRP therapy is a short 60-minute in-office visit. The process begins with acquiring a small amount of blood from the patient and placing the blood sample in a special machine that spins the blood at high speeds in order to separate the platelets from the rest of the blood components. Next, a local anesthetic is applied to the scalp and the concentrated platelet rich plasma is reintroduced into areas of the patient’s scalp that show hair thinning. Finally, microneedling is performed on the scalp to create micro-trauma and micro-channels into the skin, which activates the PRP and allows them to penetrate deep into the skin. Dr. Snyder's protocol for the nonsurgical management of hair loss consists of an initial PRP treatment, followed by maintenance treatments approximately every year.

PRP FAQs

Are There Risks?

Because PRP is made from your own blood, there is no chance of allergy or rejection. In addition, the use of amniotic fluid doesn’t cause rejection or allergic reaction when injected into a patient.

Recovery & Results

There is no downtime following this procedure, with virtually no limitations or restrictions. Most commonly, patients may develop some redness, minimal swelling and mild tenderness to the treated areas. These symptoms may last up to 48 hours. While results differ for each patient, cosmetic benefits are typically seen around 4 to 6 months after the first treatment, and will continue to improve up to a full year following treatment. As PRP is not a permanent solution for hair loss, repeat treatments are recommended every 12-18 months. It is important to note that PRP does not grow new hair follicles in areas where you are already bald. It is used to help reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will produce healthier, thicker, longer hair fibers.

Follow-Up

Routine follow up visits are an important way for Dr. Snyder to assess your hair loss, as well as new hair growth and overall restoration from treatments. By tracking each patient’s hair growth progress (length, thickness, density—how much hair is present in an area of scalp), Dr. Snyder can determine whether the specific treatment(s) is effective and tailor treatments according to each patient’s response.
