What are Skin Lesions?
Skin lesions can appear anywhere on the body, and while most are harmless and do not require removal, some may need to be removed and analyzed if believed to be cancerous. In addition, some lesions, while noncancerous, can be bothersome, painful or unsightly. The board-certified dermatologists at Snyder Dermatology in Austin, TX remove skin lesions, such as warts, skin tags, moles, keratoses, and cysts using surgical excision or by a shaving method. How to Treat Skin Lesions
Depending on the type of lesion being removed, and the outlook the dermatologist foresees, there are several options to consider for removal. A surgical excision biopsy may occur, which is when the lesion is cut out, along with some tissue and skin under and around it. This is often used for moles, cysts, or other forms of lesions that may be precancerous or show signs of cancer. Sutures (stiches) will be needed, in most cases, a healing ointment is applied and the surface of the skin heals within a week or two. A surface layer lesion may also be removed with a surgical blade that gently shaves away the mark that does not require stiches. Consultations and evaluations are needed prior to removal procedures in many cases.
