Redness that won’t fade. A flush that shows up faster than it used to. Skin that stings when nothing’s even touched it. If any of that sounds familiar, you might be dealing with rosacea, and you’re not imagining it. At Snyder Dermatology, our board-certified Austin dermatologists see this every week, and we build a treatment plan around what’s actually triggering your flares, not a one-size-fits-all routine.
What Is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a common, long-term skin condition that mostly shows up on the face: cheeks, nose, chin, forehead. For a lot of patients it starts small, maybe a flush that lingers a little longer than it should after a workout or a glass of wine, and builds from there into visible blood vessels or small bumps that can look a lot like acne. It comes and goes in flares rather than staying constant, and while there’s no cure, it’s very manageable once we understand what we’re working with. It also gets misdiagnosed often. Patients frequently come in thinking they have sunburn, adult acne, or just “sensitive skin,” when rosacea is actually the underlying cause.
What Sets Off a Rosacea Flare?
Ask ten rosacea patients what triggers their flares and you’ll get ten different answers, but a few culprits come up again and again:
- Sun and heat (Austin doesn’t make this easy)
- Spicy food and hot drinks
- Alcohol, red wine especially
- Stress
- Wind and sudden temperature swings
- Certain skincare ingredients or products
If you’ve noticed your rosacea gets harder to manage from May through September, you’re not alone. Texas summers are tough on this condition.
What Rosacea Looks and Feels Like
Rosacea shows up differently for everyone, but common signs include:
- Redness that sticks around, not just a passing flush
- Small visible blood vessels near the surface of the skin
- Burning or stinging, sometimes for no obvious reason
- Small bumps or pimples that can look like acne
- Thickened skin around the nose in longstanding cases
- Dry, irritated, or gritty-feeling eyes

How We Treat Rosacea at Snyder Dermatology
Every rosacea treatment plan starts the same way: an actual skin exam and a real conversation about your routine, your stress levels, what you eat and drink, and what’s already sitting in your medicine cabinet. From there, we might start you on a topical or oral medication to bring down the inflammation, adjust your skincare to something gentler, or, for patients who want to tackle visible vessels and redness directly, talk through laser and light-based options like IPL Photofacial. Results and timelines look different for everyone, and rosacea tends to reward consistency over any single fix.
Your day-to-day routine does a lot of the heavy lifting here. A gentle, barrier-friendly skincare routine and sunscreen every single day, not just on the days you remember, are two of the most effective ways to keep flares to a minimum, and we’ll help you build that routine at your visit. If laser or light treatment ends up being part of your plan, our Pre & Post-Procedure Skincare Guide has general guidance on caring for your skin on either side of the appointment.
Rosacea and eczema get confused for each other more often than you’d think, especially when redness is the main complaint. If you’re not sure which one you’re dealing with, our eczema treatment page covers what to look for.
