What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling is one of the latest nonsurgical skin rejuvenation breakthroughs we are thrilled to offer Austin area residents. Also known as collagen induction therapy, this treatment improves the texture, tone, and overall appearance of the skin while reducing fine lines and other irregularities. Sometimes, combined with dermabrasion, microneedling uses small needles to gently create holes in the skin, which disrupts the skin to produce collagen and elastin. Even though needles are used, the holes are very tiny and reside close together. Thus, there is no tissue destruction. Instead, the holes heal effectively, leaving the skin smooth and glowing. At Snyder Dermatology in Austin, TX, we are proud to offer patients the SkinPen, our preferred way to perform microneedling.
Who Is a Candidate for Microneedling?
Microneedling is suitable for individuals seeking to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars (including acne scars), hyperpigmentation, and stretch marks. Ideal candidates are typically in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the results, and possess skin concerns that have not responded well to other treatments. It is particularly effective for those with early signs of aging and uneven skin texture. However, it may not be suitable for people with active skin infections, severe acne, or certain skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.
Benefits of Microneedling
Benefits of Microneedling treatments include:
Improved Skin Texture and Tone: It promotes smoother, more even skin by stimulating collagen and elastin production, which helps to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and enlarged pores.
Scar Reduction: Microneedling is effective in reducing the appearance of scars, including acne scars, by breaking down old scar tissue and encouraging the growth of new skin.
Enhanced Absorption of Skincare Products: The tiny punctures created by microneedling allow for better absorption of topical treatments, enhancing their effectiveness.
Reduced Hyperpigmentation and Sun Damage: It can help diminish the appearance of dark spots and sun-damaged areas, leading to a more uniform skin tone.
Minimal Downtime: Compared to more invasive procedures, microneedling typically involves minimal downtime, with most individuals experiencing only mild redness and swelling for a few days.
Safe for All Skin Types: Microneedling is suitable for all skin types and tones, including sensitive and darker skin, and it has a lower risk of hyperpigmentation than other resurfacing treatments.
Microneedling Procedure
To begin your microneedling procedure, the treatment area is thoroughly cleansed before a topical numbing gel is applied. The needling device will be pressed gently across the skin, gliding in one direction until the entire area has been treated. The feeling resembles a piece of sandpaper rubbed over the skin. The procedure will result in tiny holes, known as microchannels, on the skin, which will close almost immediately, triggering a healing response. This results in renewed skin, including a thickened dermis, which will soften the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and scars. The procedure takes around 15 – 30 minutes.

Microneedling Results and Recovery
Right after the procedure, patients can expect a rejuvenated, glowing appearance on the skin. Over the course of a few weeks, a patient can expect to see a marked improvement in the skin’s color, tone, and texture. In addition, you will notice a drastic reduction in the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Microneedling also effectively reduces acne scars, injury scars, and stretch marks. A patient’s appearance can continue to improve for up to 6 months following initial treatment. While some patients benefit from a single treatment, 2 – 3 treatments are advised to get the best possible results. A licensed aesthetician will work closely with a patient to develop the right course of treatment based on his or her individual needs. Our dermatology office recommends the following treatment schedule for optimal results:
Rejuvenation: 4 – 6 treatments, 4 weeks apart
Acne scarring: 6 treatments, 6 weeks apart
Stretch marks: 4 – 8 treatments, 4 – 6 weeks apart.
