What are Chemical Peels?
Our Austin, TX, dermatology office assists in reversing sun damage and improving the texture and complexion of the skin with chemical peels for those in Austin, Downtown Austin, and West Lake Hills, TX. A chemical peel uses various agents to assist in removing the top layer of damaged skin, leaving behind a softer, smoother appearance. Chemical peels are used to help reduce fine lines, age spots, sunspots, blemishes, scars, and other skin irregularities on the face, neck, chest, and hands. It is also commonly used to help control and reduce the appearance of acne. Our board-certified dermatologists at Snyder Dermatology use the latest solutions in chemical peels, including SkinMedica Vitalize, SkinMedica Rejuvenize, and Beta Lift, and peels incorporated into the HydraFacial® which are chosen based on your skin type and condition.
Who Is a Candidate for a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels are an outstanding way to get the glowing complexion you want. They work similarly to other nonsurgical treatments, such as lasers and microdermabrasion, but use a chemical agent to reverse the signs of damage. Chemical peels are customized for the patient depending on their skin type and overall needs. The best candidates for this skin rejuvenation treatment include patients who:
- Are in good health
- Have mild skin irregularities such as pigmentation problems, fine lines, light age or sunspots, and a diminished skin tone
- Have not used Isotretinoin in the last month
- Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
- Are not in the sun daily, and who do not tan in tanning beds
- Do not have active cold sores
- Have not used Retin-A (Tretinoin) within 1 week prior to the peel
- Do not have specific dermatologic conditions that would preclude peels
Benefits of a Chemical Peel
Chemical Peel Procedure
There are many types of chemical peels available today and our team of dermatologists are very careful in choosing which ones we offer our patients. Chemical peels involve the application of solutions to the skin to cause exfoliation of the damaged, outer layers. The solution is altered depending on what is being treated, as well as the patient’s skin type. Some chemical peels are much milder than others, but all are generally less expensive than many other nonsurgical methods available. Prior to applying a chemical peel, we will ask a variety of questions to get an idea about your lifestyle and skin history. During the appointment, the face is cleansed thoroughly, and the solution is applied directly to the skin. Patients will feel stinging at this time, but it is only temporary. After the peel is applied, we will put a healing ointment and sunscreen on the skin.

Chemical Peel Recovery and Results
Immediately after a chemical peel, patients will notice that their skin is red and sometimes yellow in appearance. This does go away within a few hours and within 2 – 3 days, flaking will begin to occur. Depending on the grade of peel, the skin will either shed light flakes or large sections of skin can peel. It is very important not to touch the skin and pull or help the peeling process, as this could result in scarring. The peeling will happen on its own, and then you can begin to lightly exfoliate the treated areas in about 10 – 14 days, sometimes sooner. It is important to wear sunscreen at all times and to wait at least two weeks before any facial treatment.
Q: How long does one have to be out of the sun after a peel?
A: 2-3 weeks, depending on the depth of the peel chosen. However, once the sun damage is removed, you will not want to work to get it back!
