Dermaplaning

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a non-invasive aesthetic treatment that can be done as a treatment or in addition to other rejuvenating treatments like facials. Dermaplaning uses  a sharp scalpel or razor to gently remove the superficial layer of skin which is composed of dead skin cells and light fuzzy hairs called vellus hairs, also known as the ‘peach fuzz.”  This treatment is done to help reduce the appearance of the skin and offers light exfoliation for improved product penetration.

Who Is a Candidate for Dermaplaning?

The ideal candidate for dermaplaning cosmetic treatments is any individual with dull skin or those who want to remove fine facial hair. It is safe for most skin types, including sensitive skin, and can be performed on pregnant or nursing women as well. However, individuals with active acne, inflamed skin, or certain skin conditions like eczema or rosacea should avoid dermaplaning as it may exacerbate these conditions. Additionally, those with a history of keloid scarring should consult with a dermatologist before undergoing dermaplaning.

Benefits of Dermaplaning

One of the main benefits of dermaplaning is that it can immediately reveal brighter and smoother skin in very little time. Other benefits include:

    • Removes facial hair

    • Helps improve skin tone and texture with debris removal.

    • Reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation by removing dull surface skin.

    • Non-invasive

    • No downtime

Dr. Parker has been my dermatologist for years, and she is terrific. She saw my 14-year-old for the first time yesterday yesterday, and was very thorough, knowledgeable, and kind. She guided her through a skin care routine, and gave her lots of tips about keeping her skin fresh. We feel so lucky to know Dr. Parker.

Dermaplaning Procedure

When you arrive for your dermaplaning appointment, the first step of the treatment will be to cleanse your skin thoroughly. Next, a toner will be applied to remove any lingering oils. Your skin will be held taught as the scalpel is moved across your face while being held at a 45-degree angle. This angel ensures that all impurities are removed from the skin while also being safe. After the entire face has been exfoliated, a serum and sunscreen will be applied to the skin as a finishing touch. Dermaplaning on its own can take around 30 minutes. If you are having a dermaplaning done in addition to another treatment, plan for your appointment to take longer.

Dermaplaning Results and Recovery

Immediately after dermaplaning, you may notice that your skin has a slight pink tone to it. This is due to the exfoliation of the treatment, and it will subside after a few hours. You will also notice an improved smoothness to the skin. There is no downtime after dermaplaning, but your skin may be more sensitive to the sun, so it is important to protect your skin with broad-spectrum sun protection every 2 hours. You can apply makeup a few hours after dermaplaning.
