What are Keloids?

Keloids are raised, thickened areas of scar tissue that form at the site of a skin injury. Unlike normal scars, which typically become less noticeable over time, keloids can grow larger and extend beyond the boundaries of the original wound. They are often red, pink, or purple and can be itchy or painful. Keloids are considered benign tumors of the skin and are most commonly found on the chest, shoulders, earlobes, and cheeks. While they are not harmful to overall health, their appearance and symptoms can be bothersome for many individuals.

What Causes Keloids?

The exact cause of keloids is not fully understood, but they are believed to result from an overproduction of collagen during the healing process. When the skin is injured, the body produces collagen to repair the damage. In some cases, this process becomes overactive, leading to the formation of excessive scar tissue. Keloids can develop after various types of skin injuries, including cuts, surgical incisions, burns, acne, and piercings. Genetic factors also play a significant role; individuals with a family history of keloids are more likely to develop them. Additionally, keloids are more common in people with darker skin tones.

Symptoms of Keloids

Keloids are characterized by several distinct symptoms, including:

Raised, thickened scar tissue: Keloids typically appear as firm, raised areas of skin that can be smooth or lumpy in texture.

Color changes: They are often red, pink, or purple and may darken over time.

Expansion beyond the original injury: Unlike regular scars, keloids can grow beyond the boundaries of the initial wound.

Itching and discomfort: Many people with keloids experience itching, tenderness, or pain in the affected area.

Cosmetic concerns: The noticeable and sometimes large appearance of keloids can cause self-consciousness and emotional distress, particularly when they occur in visible areas.

How to Treat Keloids

Treating keloids can be challenging, but several effective methods are available to reduce their size and alleviate symptoms. At Snyder Dermatology, our dermatologists tailor treatment plans to each patient’s unique needs, utilizing a combination of therapies for optimal results. Treatment options for keloids include:

Corticosteroid injections: These injections can help flatten keloids and reduce inflammation. They are often used as the first line of treatment.

Cryotherapy: This involves freezing the keloid with liquid nitrogen, which can reduce its size and discomfort.

Laser therapy: Laser treatments can improve the texture and color of keloids, making them less noticeable.

Surgical removal: In some cases, keloids can be surgically removed, though this is often followed by other treatments to prevent recurrence.

Silicone gel sheets: These can be applied to the skin to help flatten keloids and reduce their appearance.

Pressure therapy: Using specialized garments to apply pressure to the keloid can help flatten the scar tissue.

Topical treatments: Certain topical treatments can help soften and flatten keloids.

The choice of treatment depends on the size, location, and severity of the keloid, as well as the patient’s overall health and treatment preferences.
