What is Botox®?
Botox®, or botulinum toxin type A, is a popular brand of cosmetic injectable. When injected in small, controlled doses, Botox® temporarily relaxes the facial muscles responsible for causing dynamic wrinkles, such as those formed by facial expressions. By inhibiting muscle contractions, Botox® smooths aging skin, reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles such as moderate to severe forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, and more. Common botulinum toxin treatment areas include horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet around the eyes, and vertical frown lines between the eyebrows and the platysma neck bands. Botox® is FDA-approved and has been extensively studied for its safety and efficacy in treating unwanted wrinkles. In addition to cosmetic benefits, Botox® can also address many other conditions. A personalized consultation is a great way to learn all possible benefits.
Who Is a Candidate for Botox®?
Candidates for Botox wrinkle treatments are individuals who wish to reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements. Botox® Treatment
During a Botox® treatment at Snyder Dermatology, the targeted areas of the face are first cleansed. The dermatologist may apply a topical anesthetic to minimize any discomfort. Using a fine needle, small amounts of Botox® are then injected into the specific muscles responsible for causing wrinkles. The number of injections and the exact placement depend on the individual’s facial anatomy and aesthetic goals. The procedure is relatively painless and typically takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete unless combined with other skin procedures like laser treatment or chemical peels. In many cases, Botox can also complement facial plastic surgery procedures, such as a facelift, to improve outcomes further.
Botox® Recovery and Results
After Austin Botox® injections, patients may experience mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site, which usually subsides within a few hours to a couple of days. No significant downtime is required, and most patients can return to their normal activities immediately following the procedure. However, to ensure optimal results, it is recommended that patients avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat, or lying down for 15 minutes after treatment. The effects of Botox injectable treatments typically begin to appear within 7-10 days, with full Botox results visible after about two weeks. The smoother, more youthful appearance can last for 3 to 4 months, after which repeat treatments are necessary to maintain the results. Regular Botox® injections can help prolong the benefits and potentially reduce the frequency of treatments over time.

Botox FAQs
What should I tell my doctor before getting Botox?
Before receiving Botox injections, be sure to share with your doctor a list of all over-the-counter medicines, herbal supplements, and prescription medicine that you are taking, as well as all your medical conditions. Additionally, tell your doctor if you have received any other botulinum toxin product in the last 4 months; have received injections of botulinum toxin; have recently received an antibiotic by injection; take muscle relaxants; take an allergy or cold medicine; take a sleep medicine; take aspirin-like products or blood thinners.
Who is not a candidate for Botox?
Botox is a popular treatment, but it’s not suitable for everyone. Individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding (it is not known if Botox passes into breast milk), have neuromuscular disorders (such as ALS or myasthenia gravis), have certain muscle or nerve conditions, have a history of severe allergic reactions, or have a known allergy to Botox or its ingredients should avoid it. People with active skin infections at the injection site or those taking certain medications may also not be ideal candidates due to increased risk of side effects. Additionally, those who have had adverse reactions to other botulinum toxin products or who have unrealistic expectations about results may not be good fits.
What can Botox be used to treat, medically?
In the medical space, Botox can be used for many purposes, including to treat overactive bladder symptoms, urge urinary incontinence, headaches and chronic migraines, cervical dystonia, lower limb spasticity, severe underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis), and more. At Snyder Dermatology, we offer Botox as a cosmetic treatment to smooth lines and wrinkles for a more youthful appearance.
Can Botox cause side effects?
As with any form of injectable treatment, Botox can cause side effects, but they are rare, especially when performed by a skilled and experienced professional. Most people tolerate the treatment well, but some may experience temporary side effects. Potential serious symptoms include all over muscle weakness or general muscle weakness, trouble swallowing, blurred vision, and other vision problems. It’s important to follow aftercare instructions and discuss any concerns with your provider to minimize risks.
What is Botox made of?
Botulinum neurotoxin is made of bacterium clostridium botulinum, specifically botulinum toxin type A. This is a purified and heavily diluted protein form for use in cosmetic and medical applications.
