What is Laser Vein Removal?
Men and women can develop spider veins as they age and while some will not be an issue, many can become a cosmetic or medical concern. Spider veins are small, thin, twisted blood vessels that are seen through the skin as red, blue, or purple squiggly lines. They can appear alone or in clusters and are typically located on the face and lower body. Spider veins affect approximately 30 – 60% of adults and can continue to grow in numbers, darken, and become bothersome as time passes. At Snyder Dermatology in Austin, TX, our board-certified dermatologists are experts in vein removal and offer a number of treatments to successfully remove unwanted veins. We are proud to offer patients laser vein removal with the advanced Palomar 1064. The Palomar laser is one of the most effective lasers on the market, resulting in clear, vein-free appearing skin.
What Causes Spider Veins?
Spider veins that occur in the lower body, such as the legs, may be caused by a number of reasons, including genetics, pregnancy, prolonged sitting or standing, injury, and trauma. Although for most people spider veins occurs in their legs, there are instances where fine veins in the face and nose area become enlarged and darker in color. For some, prominent facial veins are caused by rosacea. This condition is marked by numerous red spider veins in the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin, and is sometimes accompanied by acne breakouts. Chronic sun exposure can also cause spider veins, as well as bruising. In some people with chronic allergies and inherited predisposition to vein conditions, repetitive sneezing and coughing can lead to enlargement of veins around the nose and below the nostrils. Keep in mind that there may be primary and contributing factors to spider veins, and these factors may not contribute equally to the vein conditions in different individuals.
Patients who are good candidates for laser vein removal have visible veins on their body, which can be minimized or erased by laser vein therapy. Patients should be in good general health before the procedure and should tell their doctor if they have a history of blood clots or may be pregnant.
"I went in for a consultation for a scar I had from a procedure done last year. First off, the office is gorgeous with beautiful art pieces adorning the walls and a wonderful group of staff members that greet you with a warm welcome. I met with Dr. Foley who was kind and attentive as I told her about my nightmarish experience that I had at a med spa in California where I formerly resided. She listened to my concerns and recommended that I start with micro-needling to diminish the appearance of the scarring. This is when I was introduced to the esthetician Robin who was beyond outstanding and patient as she explained in detail each procedure and went over the cost details. I felt so comfortable that I decided to get my first micro-needling session with her on the very same day. I am so glad that I did because she was so gentle and checked in with me during the whole process to assure that I wasn’t uncomfortable or feeling any pain. Honestly, I felt that the micro-needling experience was quite pleasant and therapeutic in the hands and expertise of Robin. Thank you again Synder dermatology for a wonderful first time experience."- A.C. / Yelp / Apr 06, 2022

During the Treatment
Before the treatment begins, our dermatologist will cover the patient’s eyes with protective eyewear. Once the patient is ready, the laser handpiece will be gently glided over the areas of the face and body that have visible blood vessels. The Palomar laser system applies multiple wavelengths of light that can are absorbed by the blood vessel, which destroy the spider vein for a smoother appearance to the skin.
What to Expect
Laser vein treatment may cause some temporary redness, bruising, and blistering to the treated skin, but this should disappear in 2 weeks – 2 months. Patients are advised to rest and avoid strenuous activity after their treatment, and patients should cover the treated areas or use other protection from any sun exposure. For best results, patients may need multiple treatments over the course of several months. For a faster recovery, patients may consider wearing support or compression stockings to help promote better blood circulation.
