What is Laser Vein Removal?
Men and women can develop spider veins as they age and while some will not be an issue, many can become a cosmetic or medical concern. Spider veins are small, thin, twisted blood vessels that are seen through the skin as red, blue, or purple squiggly lines. They can appear alone or in clusters and are typically located on the face and lower body. Spider veins affect approximately 30 – 60% of adults and can continue to grow in numbers, darken, and become bothersome as time passes. At Snyder Dermatology in Austin, TX, our board-certified dermatologists are experts in vein removal and offer a number of treatments to successfully remove unwanted veins. We are proud to offer patients laser vein removal with the advanced Palomar 1064. The Palomar laser is one of the most effective lasers on the market, resulting in clear, vein-free appearing skin.
What Causes Spider Veins?
Spider veins that occur in the lower body, such as the legs, may be caused by a number of reasons, including genetics, pregnancy, prolonged sitting or standing, injury, and trauma. Although for most people spider veins occurs in their legs, there are instances where fine veins in the face and nose area become enlarged and darker in color. For some, prominent facial veins are caused by rosacea. This condition is marked by numerous red spider veins in the nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin, and is sometimes accompanied by acne breakouts. Chronic sun exposure can also cause spider veins, as well as bruising. In some people with chronic allergies and inherited predisposition to vein conditions, repetitive sneezing and coughing can lead to enlargement of veins around the nose and below the nostrils. Keep in mind that there may be primary and contributing factors to spider veins, and these factors may not contribute equally to the vein conditions in different individuals.
Patients who are good candidates for laser vein removal have visible veins on their body, which can be minimized or erased by laser vein therapy. Patients should be in good general health before the procedure and should tell their doctor if they have a history of blood clots or may be pregnant.

"I've been seeing Dr. Snyder for the past ten years. The first time was when I was splitting my time between Los Angeles and Austin while in graduate school. I had a major eczema problem on my skin. I had no clue that the skin problem was from the fumes of an art project I had been creating for a client, till I discussed the specifics of my days before the out break with Dr. Snyder. She was like one of those damn ghost whisperers, walking me through my days. When she nailed the source, she simply explained to me the problem was from the fumes of the chemicals I was working with at the time (industrial resin and a catalyst). She prescribed a steroid and gave me a skin routine, my eczema went away within a week. Amazing! She is still my "go to" dermatologist for other issues I have had over the past few years. Yes, I travel from LA to Austin to see her. She's that good. Keep in mind that she is straightforward and to the point but awesome!"- J.S. / Yelp / Oct 02, 2019
"Dr. PARKER is an incredible dermatologist. I called on Tuesday morning in a panic because of an allergic reaction - she fit me in later that day. Not only did she work quickly to diagnose the problem, but she prescribed medications that fit my difficult and specific allergies. I called on Wednesday to check in and she spoke on the phone with me personally, and is meeting with me for a follow-up as well. 10/10 doctor all around- truly cares about her patients. Would recommend her to everyone reading this!!!! Best dermatologist experience I've had- and I've seen a lot of them."- C.C. / Yelp / Aug 22, 2019

During the Treatment
Before the treatment begins, our dermatologist will cover the patient’s eyes with protective eyewear. Once the patient is ready, the laser handpiece will be gently glided over the areas of the face and body that have visible blood vessels. The Palomar laser system applies multiple wavelengths of light that can are absorbed by the blood vessel, which destroy the spider vein for a smoother appearance to the skin.
What to Expect
Laser vein treatment may cause some temporary redness, bruising, and blistering to the treated skin, but this should disappear in 2 weeks – 2 months. Patients are advised to rest and avoid strenuous activity after their treatment, and patients should cover the treated areas or use other protection from any sun exposure. For best results, patients may need multiple treatments over the course of several months. For a faster recovery, patients may consider wearing support or compression stockings to help promote better blood circulation.
