Skin Cancer Screenings

What Is Skin Cancer Screening?

Skin cancer screenings are an important aspect of all skin check-ups. Why? Because according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. In addition, the seemingly harmless moles, lesions, and mysterious spots on the skin are not all created equal. It is better to be safe than sorry and have a board-certified dermatologist assess the growth to make sure you are out of harm’s way. While in most cases, moles and other skin growths are benign, sometimes these abnormal skin cells can develop into cancerous cells. Our board-certified Austin, TX, dermatologists here at Snyder Dermatology provide full-body skin exams to screen for skin cancer. The high prevalence of skin cancer in sunny states like Texas makes these routine screenings even more crucial, especially if you spend a lot of time in the sun or have a personal or family history of skin cancer. Early detection is key to giving you more treatment options and a better outcome. At Snyder Dermatology, we offer comprehensive skin cancer screenings. Call our office today to schedule your appointment.

Who Is a Candidate for Skin Cancer Screening?

Those who are at an increased risk of developing skin cancer are candidates for skin cancer screening. Men and women of all ages and skin types are at risk for skin cancer. While those with lighter and fairer complexions are generally at greater risk, all skin tones and types can get skin cancer. Our providers at Snyder Dermatology teach patients how to do a self-exam so they will know what to look for and what is normal. Patients should schedule an appointment anytime there is a concern or worry that an area looks suspicious or if a spot has changed, itches, or bleeds. If you or a close relative has been diagnosed with skin cancer, you should be seen for an annual skin cancer screening.

Benefits of Skin Cancer Screening

There are many benefits of skin cancer screening, including the following:

Early Detection: Identifies skin cancer at an early, more treatable stage, improving the likelihood of successful treatment and reducing the risk of severe outcomes.

Increased Survival Rates: Early melanoma and other skin cancers detection significantly increases survival rates.

Preventative Care: Helps in the early removal of pre-cancerous lesions, preventing the development of invasive cancer.

Peace of Mind: Provides reassurance to individuals who may be concerned about unusual skin changes or moles.

Personalized Advice: Offers personalized recommendations for skin care and monitoring based on individual risk factors.

Professional Monitoring: This ensures continuous monitoring by healthcare professionals, which is particularly beneficial for individuals at high risk of skin cancer.

Cost-Effectiveness: Early treatment of skin cancer is often less costly than treating advanced stages of the disease.

Skin Cancer Screening Process

During your skin cancer screening, the doctor will check your body for moles, birthmarks, and any abnormal areas. They may create a “mole map” that shows the size and location of your moles to track them at future screenings. Sometimes, we take photos of certain areas and may even perform a biopsy of a suspicious mole or spot. When a biopsy is needed, the area will be numbed before it is sampled. The sample will then be sent to a pathology lab for analysis and testing. You will be contacted with the results when your provider receives the pathology report.

Skin Cancer Screening Results and Recovery

Our providers here at Snyder Dermatology will discuss the best way to care for your skin after a biopsy to ensure it heals correctly. With proper care, scarring is limited or will appear flat and eventually fade so that it is not as noticeable. Dr. Snyder and all the providers are passionate about healthy skin and take the time necessary to talk with every patient about what to expect, including recommending future actions and assessments. You will be advised when to return for your next skin cancer screening at the end of your appointment.
