Skin Lesion Removal

What are Skin Lesions?

Skin lesions can appear anywhere on the body, and while most are harmless and do not require removal, some may need to be removed and analyzed if believed to be cancerous. In addition, some noncancerous lesions can be bothersome, painful, or unsightly. The board-certified dermatologists at Snyder Dermatology in Austin, TX, remove skin lesions, such as warts, skin tags, moles, keratoses, and cysts, using surgical excision or by a shaving method. All of the removed lesions undergo evaluation by a certified pathologist to ensure the safety of our patients.  Most lesions can be removed right inside our dermatology office.

Who Is a Candidate for Skin Lesion Removal?

Our dermatology practice strives to determine the best way to diagnose and assess skin lesions in order to give patients the best outcome possible. Not all lesions require removal. Some common lesions that our office removes include:

  • Moles for cosmetic purposes
  • Dysplastic moles
  • Melanoma
  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Cysts
  • Age spots
  • Sunspots
  • Birthmarks
  • Warts
  • Seborrheic Keratosis

Each patient case is unique and will require a full assessment before lesion removal is determined. We will discuss the type of lesion you have and the options for removal if desired.

Benefits of Skin Lesion Removal

Removing skin lesions offers several benefits, including improved cosmetic appearance, especially when the lesions are highly visible, thereby enhancing self-esteem and confidence. Additionally, removal can provide relief from physical discomfort or irritation, such as itching, bleeding, or rubbing against clothing. It can also prevent potential complications, such as infection or further growth, particularly for lesions prone to irritation. Furthermore, excising suspicious or atypical lesions allows for pathological examination, which is crucial for early detection and treatment of skin cancers, ensuring better long-term health outcomes.

Dr. Parker has been my dermatologist for years, and she is terrific. She saw my 14-year-old for the first time yesterday yesterday, and was very thorough, knowledgeable, and kind. She guided her through a skin care routine, and gave her lots of tips about keeping her skin fresh. We feel so lucky to know Dr. Parker.

Skin Lesion Removal Procedure

Depending on the type of lesion being removed and the outlook the dermatologist foresees, there are several options to consider for removal. A surgical excision biopsy may occur when the lesion is cut out, along with some tissue and skin under and around it. This is often used for moles, cysts, or other forms of lesions that may be precancerous or show signs of cancer. Sutures (stitches) will be needed; in most cases, a healing ointment is applied, and the surface of the skin heals within a week or two.  A surface layer lesion may also be removed with a surgical blade that gently shaves away the mark and does not require stitches.  Consultations and evaluations are needed prior to removal procedures in many cases.

Skin Lesion Removal Recovery and Results

The results of skin lesion removal typically include a smoother skin surface and the elimination of any discomfort or irritation caused by the lesion. The recovery process varies depending on the size and type of lesion removed and the method used for removal. Surgical excisions might require stitches and a longer recovery period, typically up to a few weeks. Post-procedure care includes keeping the area clean and protected, monitoring for signs of infection, and following any specific instructions the healthcare provider provides. Scarring is a potential outcome, but it often fades over time and can be minimized with proper wound care and possibly treatments like silicone gel or sheets.
